The TownLake YMCA, in collaboration with the Global Impact Initiative (GII), is hosting a Refugee Mother’s Day Arts and Crafts Bazaar on Saturday, May 11, from 10 am to 1 pm in Austin. Refugees from Ukraine, Afghanistan, Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi, now residing in Austin, will showcase handmade goods, traditional foods, and baked treats at this free event. Anjum Malik, CEO of GII, emphasized the refugees' entrepreneurial spirit and cultural heritage. With over 2000 refugees settling in Central Texas in the past two years, organizations like GII provide vital support, including employment opportunities and language classes. The Greater Austin YMCA offers services such as memberships, mental health counseling, and recreational programs to assist newcomers. Shaq Brown, Chief Operations Officer for the Greater Austin YMCA, highlighted Everline Counseling as an accessible mental health care service within YMCA facilities. Through events like the Refugee Mother’s Day Bazaar and ongoing support services, the community demonstrates solidarity and compassion towards its newest members.
